Westport’s
Tavern on Main offers palate enticing and
stomach warming dishes in a Federal style
building that began its life providing food
to Westporters in the 18th century. In 1813,
Mr. Levi T. Downs ran a grocery store in
that newly constructed building which by its
very nature would have been a gathering
place for neighboring shoppers. Another
“social” aspect of the store was created by
Mr. Downs’ daughter Esther who ran a school
for girls in the back wing. Tradition has
it that Sam Gorham’s adjoining furniture
store afforded a girl watching view for the
